Milan has one of the best public transport systems in Europe (ATM). But for a tourist, the choice of vehicle changes the experience completely.
The Historic Tram (Lines 1, 5, 10)
The Romantic Choice.
These are the wooden 1920s cars.
- Pros: Incredible atmosphere. The slow rattle is soothing. Large windows for sightseeing. Line 1 passes the Castle and La Scala.
- Cons: No Air Conditioning (they are ovens in August). High steps to get on (bad for strollers). Slow.
The Modern Bus / Trolleybus (Lines 90/91, 73, etc)
The Practical Choice.
Standard city buses.
- Pros: They go everywhere the tram tracks don't. Air-conditioned. Accessible for wheelchairs.
- Cons: They get stuck in traffic. Nothing romantic about them. The circular 90/91 lines can be a bit sketchy late at night.
The Metro (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5)
The Speed Choice.
- Pros: Extremely fast. Trains every 2 minutes. The new M4 (Blue) connects Linate Airport to the center in 12 minutes.
- Cons: You are underground. You see nothing of the city.
The HOHO Bus
The Tourist Choice.
- Pros: Commentary. Takes you door-to-door for sights. Guaranteed seat on the loop.
- Cons: Price (much more expensive than a €2.20 ATM ticket).
The Verdict:
- Use the Metro to get to the center or your hotel.
- Use the Historic Tram for a cheap, unguided scenic ride after dinner.
- Use the HOHO Bus for your main day of sightseeing to learn the history.
