History of Milan Trams - 1970s Vintage Photos

While the Hop-On Hop-Off buses are modern double-deckers, they share the road with legends. The Milan Tram is an icon as big as the Duomo or the panettone.

The 'Peter Witt' Type (Class 1500)

Look at this photo from 1970.

This tram model, known as the Carrelli (Bogies), was introduced in 1928. Yes, you read that right. The trams you ride today on Line 1 are almost 100 years old.

• The Design: Based on American streetcars from Cleveland.
• The Interior: Polished wooden benches, glass lamps, and brass handles. The driver stands up to drive, using a crank handle.

The 1970s Atmosphere

In the 1970s, Milan was a different beast. It was the "Lead Years" (Anni di Piombo)—a time of political tension and strikes. But the tram was the constant. The orange/yellow paint schemes (seen in the photo) were standard then. The city was grayer, foggier, and more industrial.

Why They Still Run

You might wonder why Milan hasn't replaced them.

1. They Work: They are virtually indestructible.
2. Agility: Their chassis allows them to take tight corners in the medieval center that modern, longer trams cannot handle.
3. Love: The Milanese people would riot if you took away their '28 trams.

When you see one rattling past your bus, you are looking at a moving museum.
