A tour boat navigating the Darsena in the Navigli district

Milan has no sea and no major river running through its center, yet it was a major port. How? The Navigli. This system of artificial canals connected the city to the Swiss lakes and the sea.

Leonardo's Touch

Leonardo da Vinci himself worked on the locks of the Navigli to help transport the marble for the Duomo. You can still see his original sketches in the museum, and the lock gates on the Naviglio di San Marco (though that one is dry now). Today, two major canals remain active:

  1. Naviglio Grande: The oldest and most lively, lined with bars and artists' studios.
  2. Naviglio Pavese: Runs straight towards Pavia.

The Boat Tours

You can take a 60-minute boat cruise starting from the Darsena (the old harbor).

  • What you see: The "washerwomen's alley" (Vicolo dei Lavandai), the old bridges, and the distinctive "ringhiera" houses of old Milan.
  • Vibe: It's peaceful during the day and bustling at night.

The Capital of Aperitivo

From 6:00 PM onwards, the Navigli transform. This is the heart of Milan's Aperitivo culture.

  • The Deal: Buy a cocktail (usually €10-€15), and get access to a buffet of pasta, pizza, cold cuts, and cheating because it's basically dinner.
  • The Crowd: Students, models, workers, and tourists all mixing by the water.

Note: In summer, the mosquitoes can be fierce near the water. Bring spray!
