Stop number 3 on the Red Line lands you in Piazza della Scala. You look at the building... and you might be underwhelmed. The facade is a modest, grey neoclassical wall. Do not be fooled. This is the Teatro alla Scala, the most demanding and prestigious opera stage in the world.

The Inner World

Inside, the modesty vanishes. It is a horseshoe of red velvet, gold leaf, and ivory.

  • Acoustics: The design is perfect. A whisper on stage can be heard in the loggione (the highest gallery).
  • The Chandelier: A massive crystal centerpiece with 383 bulbs.

The 'Prima': Italy's Superbowl

Every year on December 7th (Saint Ambrose day, Milan's patron saint), the season opens. It is not just an opera; it is a state event.

  • Who goes?: The President of Italy, royalty, billionaires, and celebrities.
  • The Price: Tickets for opening night can cost €3,000+.
  • The Drama: The audience at La Scala is ruthless. They have booed world-famous tenors off the stage if they miss a high C.

A Phoenix Video

The theatre has a turbulent history.

  1. 1776: The previous theatre burned down.
  2. 1778: La Scala opened.
  3. 1943: Allied bombing in WWII destroyed the roof and the auditorium.
  4. 1946: It was rapidly rebuilt. It was a symbol: "If La Scala sings again, Milan lives again."

Fun Fact: In the 1800s, the main floor (platea) didn't have seats like today. It was a place for standing, socializing, and yes, even eating and gambling during performances! The lights stayed on during the show so people could see each other's outfits.
