The spires of the Duomo silhouetted against a sunset sky

Most churches have a dome you can climb. The Duomo di Milano has an entire roof you can walk on. It is a marble landscape of spires, statues, and flying buttresses floating above the city.

Stairs vs. Elevator

You have two ticket options:

  1. Stairs: About 250 steps. Cheaper, good cardio, but can be narrow.
  2. Elevator: Whisks you up most of the way (you still have to walk a bit at the top). Worth the extra euros if you're saving energy for dinner.

The Forest of Spires

Once you are up there, you are surrounded by 135 spires and over 3,400 statues.

  • The Details: You can see the intricate carving that is invisible from the street. Gargoyles, saints, and even boxers (added in modern restorations) hide among the marble.
  • The Madonnina: You are as close as you can get to the golden Virgin Mary dazzling at the very top (108 meters high).

Golden Hour Magic

Why go at sunset?

  • The Stone: The Candoglia marble turns a warm, glowing pink as the sun goes down.
  • The View: To the north, on a clear day (often after a windy storm), you can see the snow-capped Alps rising behind the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova.
  • The Atmosphere: It is quieter (usually) and infinitely more romantic.

Pro Tip: Check the sunset time and book your slot for one hour before. Security lines can take time, and you don't want to miss the light.
