The Hop-On Hop-Off buses start running around 9:30 AM. By then, Piazza del Duomo is already a zoo. If you want that shot—the one with the pigeons flying and no people—you need to change your schedule.

The Golden Hour Strategy

The Duomo faces west. This means the sun rises behind the cathedral (or to the side, depending on the season).

• The Silhouette: As the sun creeps up, the facade is in shadow, creating a powerful silhouette against a colorful sky.
• The Rays: Often, sunbeams pierce through the pinnacles and flying buttresses.

Step-by-Step Plan

1. Check Sunrise Time: In summer, this might be 5:30 AM. In winter, a manageable 7:30 AM.
2. Arrive 30 mins Early: This is "Blue Hour." The streetlights are still on, mixing with the natural blue light. It's just you, the street cleaners, and serious tripod-wielding photographers.
3. The Puddle Shot: If it rained the night before, look for puddles in the uneven paving stones. Get low. The reflection of the Duomo in the water is award-winning material.
4. The Birds: Pigeons are sleepy too. If you disrupt a flock, they will take flight in unison. With a fast shutter speed, you catch them framing the cathedral.

Breakfast Reward

After the shoot, the city starts to wake up. Head to Camparino in Galleria or Marchesi 1824. They open early. Enjoy a cappuccino standing at the bar like a true Milanese while the tourists are still asleep.

Catch the First Bus

You are already at Stop 1. You have the advantage. You can be the first person on the top deck when the service starts, securing the front seat for the rest of the tour.
