A complete guide to the Navigli district. Learn about Leonardo da Vinci's locks, take a boat tour on the Naviglio Grande, and find the best happy hour.

Milan has no sea and no major river running through its center, yet it was a major port. How? The Navigli. This system of artificial canals connected the city to the Swiss lakes and the sea.
Leonardo da Vinci himself worked on the locks of the Navigli to help transport the marble for the Duomo. You can still see his original sketches in the museum, and the lock gates on the Naviglio di San Marco (though that one is dry now). Today, two major canals remain active:
You can take a 60-minute boat cruise starting from the Darsena (the old harbor).
From 6:00 PM onwards, the Navigli transform. This is the heart of Milan's Aperitivo culture.
Note: In summer, the mosquitoes can be fierce near the water. Bring spray!
