Navigli District Guide - Aperitivo & Canals

Milan is a landlocked industrial city... with a harbor. The Navigli (Canals) are the remnants of a massive network that once connected Milan to the sea and the lakes. Today, they are the epicenter of nightlife.

The History: Leonardo's Waterways

Originally built to transport goods (paper, wine, salt), the canals became famous for transporting the marble used to build the Duomo. Leonardo da Vinci himself studied the system and designed the innovative "miter lock" gates that are still visible today at the Conca dell'Incoronata.

The Two Main Canals

1. Naviglio Grande

The oldest and most popular.

• Vibe: Picturesque, lined with "Ringhiera" houses (balcony houses), artists' studios, and hundreds of bars.
• Look for: The "Vicolo dei Lavandai," where washerwomen used to scrub clothes.

2. Naviglio Pavese

• Vibe: Slightly grittier, younger crowd, university students.
• Look for: Local trattorias serving Milanese Risotto.

The Ritual: Aperitivo

This is where the Navigli truly shine. From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, "Happy Hour" takes over.

• The Deal: You buy a cocktail (Spritz, Negroni) for €10-€15.
• The Food: Included in the price is a buffet. Pasta, pizza, cold cuts, cheeses, roasted veggies. It's essentially dinner.
• The Spot: Grab a table outside. Watch the sun set over the water.

How to Get There via Bus Tour

The bus doesn't drive on the canal banks (pedestrian only).

• Stop: Piazza XXIV Maggio.
• Walk: Head towards the "Darsena" (the renewed harbor). It’s a 5-minute walk.
