Intricate marble spires on the roof of the Duomo

Many tourists hop off the bus at Stop 1: Duomo, stand in the square, take a selfie with the pigeons, and leave. They are making a critical mistake. The real magic of Milan's cathedral happens 70 meters above the ground.

The Terraces: A Marble Forest

The roof of the Duomo is unique in Gothic architecture: it's a completely walkable space. It is not just a viewing platform; it is a "marble forest." You are surrounded by:

  • 135 Spires: Each topped with a statue of a saint or martyr.
  • 3,400 Statues: Look for the odd ones—there are boxers, tennis players (added in recent restorations), and even a pigeon!

What You See

The Madonnina

The golden statue of Mary protecting the city stands on the tallest spire. Tradition says no building in Milan can be taller than her (modern skyscrapers put a replica on their roofs to "cheat" this rule). You can never get closer to her than here.

The Alps

On a clear winter day or after a storm, the view is breathtaking. The snow-capped Alps rise sharply behind the city skyline, framing the marble spires against mountains.

The Square Below

Watch the tiny ants of people in Piazza del Duomo. It gives you a sense of scale that you can't get from the ground.

Practical Info for Visitors

Lift vs Stairs

  • Stairs: About 250 steps. Cheaper and rarely has a line.
  • Lift: Costs a bit more. Saves your legs, but there can be a queue. Note: The lift doesn't go to the very top; you still have to walk the last flight to the ridge.

Dress Code

Strictly enforced. Even on the roof, it is consecrated ground.

  • Shoulders: Must be covered.
  • Knees: Must be covered (no short shorts or mini skirts).
  • Tip: Bring a light scarf to wrap around yourself if it's hot.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset. The pink Candoglia marble absorbs the sunlight and glows orange and purple as the sun goes down. It is the most photogenic hour in Milan.
